The Number 1 Remedy For Clothes That Are Too Tight
Have you ever found yourself hesitating to buy new clothes?
On one hand, you want to feel comfortable – you want to breathe, move with ease, and not be distracted by a waistband digging into your skin.
On the other, you worry that buying bigger clothes means you’re ‘giving up’ or that you won’t be ‘motivated’ to lose weight.
Maybe you believe that wearing tight clothes is a way to keep yourself in check, a silent reprimand for eating in a way you deem ‘wrong.’
Perhaps you feel you don’t deserve to spend money on yourself unless you shrink to a size you believe is acceptable.
But what if the opposite is true?
What if allowing yourself to be comfortable, to wear clothes that fit and feel good, is actually the path to a more peaceful relationship with food and your body?
Think about it… How has the self-punishment approach worked for you so far? Has it brought you lasting peace? I’m willing to bet that if it had, you wouldn’t be here, reading this.
If you’ve been following my blogs for a while, you’ll know that I’ve learned a lot from our dog, Queenie. When she was a jumpy puppy, I discovered that training her wasn’t really about training the dog – it was about training us, the owners. We had to unlearn old methods based on punishment and control and instead focus on kindness, consistency, and reward. We were encouraged to reinforce the behaviours we wanted rather than scolding the ones we didn’t. And it worked beautifully.
As humans, we really aren’t so different. Living in clothes that are too small is a form of self-punishment. It’s a daily reminder of supposed failure, a signal that you don’t deserve ease or comfort. But just as a puppy thrives with patience and positive reinforcement, so do we. You can’t shame yourself into lasting change – it might work temporarily, but it leads to rebellion, frustration, and exhaustion in the long run.
If your clothes don’t fit, consider giving or putting them away! Pack them up in a suitcase or tuck them out of sight. There’s no need to start your day with a reminder of what you used to wear.
Instead, give yourself permission to buy a few things that fit you beautifully now. They don’t have to be expensive! Charity shops and thrift stores often have wonderful pieces. The key is to choose items that you enjoy wearing, that feel good on your skin, and that let you move freely.
So, will you try this little experiment? Honour your body as it is today and see how it feels. Let me know how it goes. I’d love to hear from you.
And if this post resonated with you, and if you’re tired of the struggle – of battling binges, guilt, or the relentless pressure to shrink or change your body – I’d love to help. Book a free Discovery Session with me, and let’s talk about how you can find true peace with food and yourself.
Sending you closets-full of love and permission to care for yourself exactly as you are.
Hi, I'm Vania.
I'm passionate about helping you break free from the exhausting cycle of yo-yo dieting, body shame, overeating, bingeing, and emotional eating.
For decades, I was at war with my body and food. It wasn't until I found an approach which didn't involve strict rules, diets and a focus on weight, that my relationship with food and my body transformed into one of ease and peace. There’s a lightness in living when food no longer holds power over your thoughts. If you're seeking that kind of freedom — where food becomes simple and life feels full — I’d love to walk that journey with you.
