Wasting Food
How do you feel about wasting food? Is it easy or hard for you to do?
I used to have a real issue with wasting food. I didn’t grow up deprived. I always had enough food. My parents didn’t worry about wasting food and they never made us eat our food because there were children starving in Africa. My issue with wasting food was my own doing – and it stemmed from my concern for the planet’s ability to sustain human (and other) life. The amount of food that is wasted is absolutely staggering! Around the world, about one third of all food is wasted in the production and consumption cycles – and most of that happens in the industrialised nations. And it’s not just about the wasted food itself – it’s all the energy and resources required to grow, produce, process, package and transport it that is wasted too! That’s a big impact on our already strained little globe in space.
But I’m not telling you this to add to the guilt you no doubt already carry. I’m just telling you my story.
We all have our stories about why wasting food is difficult for us. And it is a very tricky subject – because, let’s face it, wasting food isn’t helpful in the bigger picture, and there are definitely things we can do to minimise it.
Having said that, this isn’t a blog about environmental awareness – and while everything is connected – my purpose here is to talk about the issue of wasting food when it comes to you, your body and your relationship with food and eating.
What does wasting food mean to you, and why?
- What did your parents, grandparents or important adults in your life teach you about wasting food?
- Where else did you pick up ideas about wasting food?
- What did you make these all mean? What did you tell yourself you had to do?
- How has the experience of dieting impacted on your willingness to waste food?
- If you waste food on your body (meaning food you don’t need) – is that the same as or different from throwing it away?
- Why?
- How might being comfortable with wasting food, benefit your evolving relationship with it and eating?
- How might being comfortable with wasting food, benefit your evolving relationship with your body?
Will you think about these questions and let me know? In the comments, on my Facebook Page, or anywhere you see this posted.
And if you don’t already have it – my ebook, A Guide to Peaceful Eating, is still available for free, on the top right sign up box. It’s a nifty little book to help you get started.
Sending love your way xx
Hi, I'm Vania.
I'm passionate about helping you break free from the exhausting cycle of yo-yo dieting, body shame, overeating, bingeing, and emotional eating.
For decades, I was at war with my body and food. It wasn't until I found an approach which didn't involve strict rules, diets and a focus on weight, that my relationship with food and my body transformed into one of ease and peace. There’s a lightness in living when food no longer holds power over your thoughts. If you're seeking that kind of freedom — where food becomes simple and life feels full — I’d love to walk that journey with you.
