You’ve heard about intuitive eating, eating with attunement, or mindful eating. You might even be practising it – trying to listen to your body’s signals, honouring hunger and fullness, trusting yourself to choose what feels good.

But here’s the catch: what if it doesn’t seem to be working? What if you’re still struggling – with your body, with your food choices, or with the nagging voice that says, “This should have fixed everything by now”?

Why ‘working’ isn’t always clear

First, it’s important to ask: what does “working” mean for you? Is it about weight loss? About feeling peaceful? About never having urges or binges again?

Often, when we adopt attuned eating, we expect quick, tidy results. We want our bodies to change, our cravings to disappear, our relationship with food to be forever healed.

But healing and change are rarely linear or instant. Sometimes it’s messy and slow. Sometimes you take two steps forward and one step back. Sometimes your body needs time to adjust, to recalibrate, to unlearn decades of dieting patterns.

The cultural soup and internal conflicts

Remember, you’re not practising attuned eating in a vacuum. You’re swimming in a culture that constantly bombards you with messages about dieting, control, shame, and appearance.

Even when you try to listen to your body, those messages can create confusion or conflict. You might find yourself second-guessing your hunger cues or your food choices. You might feel torn between trusting your body and listening to cultural expectations.

That tension can make it feel like attuned eating “doesn’t work,” when in fact you’re learning a new, unfamiliar language – the language of your body.

What ‘not working’ can actually mean

Sometimes, what feels like attuned eating “not working” is actually your body or mind communicating a deeper need.

Maybe your body is craving rest, not food.
Maybe you need more safety or emotional support.
Maybe your nervous system is still recovering from past trauma or stress.
Maybe you’re in the “messy middle” – the place where old habits loosen but new patterns aren’t fully settled.

In these moments, patience and compassion are key.

What helps when attuned eating feels stuck

  • Slow down. Return to the basics of noticing hunger and fullness without judgement.
  • Check in with your emotions and environment. Are you stressed, tired, overwhelmed?
  • Be curious, not critical. What’s happening inside and outside of you right now?
  • Seek support. A coach, therapist, or supportive community can help you navigate the bumps.
  • Remember that progress isn’t always visible. Sometimes growth is internal and subtle.

Final thought

Eating with attunement is a practice, not a quick fix.
It’s a journey through complexity, contradiction, and self-discovery.
If it feels like it’s not working, try to give yourself some grace – you’re learning.

Be kind to yourself through the process. Also be patient :).
Every moment of awareness, every pause, every choice is a step toward peace.
